Secret Interview Answers to Competency Interview Questions

I will make this simple and direct. So direct you will think there is more to it but frankly I am old school. And in my 35 year history I have yet to find anyone in the Human Resources that would argue the validity of this information.

Actually it isn't a secret I just call it that because of the people (professionals?) hiding it in their thousand dollar seminars. But frankly it comes down to the following so pay close attention. And remember this will take study and preparation so KNOW the job and company. If you go into a blind interview (know nothing about the company or job) a skilled interviewer will eat you alive. So prepare and keep reading.

Secret 1: ALWAYS Relate every tough question to the job your interviewing to get. This will get you more points because they are looking for working knowledge. I more than understand that everyone reading this comes from different backgrounds. But you know what? That doesn't matter.

Because the toughest questions have nothing to do with what you actually know. But how you can relate that knowledge through analogies. This is the core of how you answer these type of questions. However do not discount the next two secrets. Because all 3 combined will give you an edge.

Secret 2: Never let them see you sweat. No matter WHAT they throw at you keep your game face on. An experienced interviewer is sometimes looking more for your reaction than the actual answer. So expect the unexpected. In fact i actually train people to do just that.

Secret 3: Close the interview with a quick but effective power statement. You want a to confirm when you can followup with them in the near future. The way you can do that is by saying something like:

"Hey as you can see from my answers regarding company "x" for the position of "y" that I am very experienced and would like to follow up with you early next week about the job to see where you are with hiring process."
