With the smarthphone market becoming more and more competitive and a new version of the popular Google Android platform also due this year, the latest Apple iPhone release is perhaps the most important update in the brands history if they wanted to maintain their stranglehold on the smartphone market. And it seems the new iPhone 4, complete with the first re design of the handset along with a bevy of new features is enough to propel this handset not only to the front of the waiting pack, but by some distance too.

Call quality on the iPhone 4 seems to be an improvement over previous models. The much reported external antenna, despite some initial issues, generally maintains a good quality of signal. Apple have taken the wise move of including a noise cancelling microphone in this release. What this means is that during a call, both voice sounder fuller and clearer due to background noise being filtered out. A new type of call that is being heavily marketed is the new "Face Time" system. This is a variety of video call but one that does not suffer from the problems experienced by mobile handsets in earlier attempts. Gone is the jumpy video images and the breaks in audio, as well as the high call costs. As long as both users have an iPhone 4 and a WiFI connection, then excellent audio and video can be enjoyed for no cost. These improvement will certainly ensure more people will now use the format, with the possibility of "FaceTime" progressing so users with different handsets can enjoy it too.

The ever impressive Safari web browser is again present on the iPhone 4. Must iPhone users would agree that this is a frequently used feature thanks to the phones excellent connectivity. The new version of Safari has undergone some minor updates, but to be honest the previous version was so good that a major over haul was hardly needed. Bing has now been added as an additional search engine and the URL suggestions appear when you type. The new 802.11n WiFi speed is now catered for, offering the best browsing speeds. When on the move then the handset benefits from EDGE, HSDPA and the new HSUPA system. The new unified inbox allows you to collaborate mail from several different mail accounts as well as benefit from additional features such as threaded conversations. No modern phone would be complete without an array of multimedia features, and thanks to High Definition video recording, a 5 mega pixel camera and a new front facing camera, fitted to facilitate the new "FaceTime" system.

This latest update is going to prove a winner for the manufacturers. FaceTime look destined to be a new way of making calls, the sleek new look will win many fans and the host of other features just strengthen the iPhones position at the head of the table.
