subject: Prepare Your Home For Winter [print this page]

With the winter weather starting to kick in, we're all starting to spend more time indoors. Although we are indoors and out of the cold, it's still important to maintain good health. After all, if have health problems during the winter, you are more likely to catch other diseases and conditions. There are a few things you can do to ensure you stay healthy and safe in your home this winter.

Maintaining good air quality within your home is important. The amount of moisture in the air is a big part of air quality as a high moisture level can increase mold and mildew growth. Using a dehumidifier can help to lower the levels of moisture in the air within your home. If the humidity is too high, mold can grow which can potentially damage your health. I should also point out that if a problem with mold gets out of control, can cause damage to your house, which often ends with costly repair bills.

Another aspect of air quality is the amount of dust, dirt and mold spores in the air. Mold spores can be spread around the entire house which can create more mold problems. All the other dust and dirt in the air can be breathed in. You can use an air purifier which removes a lot of the impurities from the air, making is better to breathe.

Another device you should consider using is a carbon monoxide detector. These devices that are attached to your wall or ceiling are very similar to a fire alarm. They can detect high levels of carbon monoxide within the air.

Carbon monoxide is deadly as it removes the oxygen from your blood, therefore not allowing enough oxygen to your organs. The most common source of carbon monoxide in the home is a faulty heating system such as a boiler. The problem with carbon monoxide is that it's odorless making it even deadlier.

Because your boiler or heating system will be on most of the day during winter, having a carbon monoxide detector is even more important.

All these devices are recommended during the winter months as poor air quality can be very harmful to your health. Also, faulty heating devices can be a winter killer. With predictions of a cold and possibly snowy winter here in the UK, now's the most important time to get hold of these vital pieces of equipment, after all, poor air quality can harm everyone in your household.
