subject: Tips For Buying A Costume At The Right Price [print this page]

Regardless of whether you're buying a costume for an adult or a child, you likely have a budget. Some people don't mind spending hundreds of dollars as long as they get the right look. On the other hand, some people are on very tight budges and worry about coming up with a costume that will get praise and positive feedback.

Of course everyone wants to feel really special when they're dressed in a Halloween or party costume. Luckily, there are tricks for finding costumes that will fit any budget whether it's lavish or low cost.

Start by being honest about the budget and consider how many people have to wear costumes. Will the entire family be going to a costume party? If so, they'll obviously all need costumes. If only one person is going to be attending an event, that could be easier on the budget.

Now think about the various places you might find good costumes. You might try looking in the boxes in the attic or raid your grandparent's closet. Wearing turn of the century or flapper costumes are always a big hit at costume parties. With a little luck you will find things like funny ties, vintage coats, and old jewelry and not have to spend any money.

If you have a little larger budget, you can go to vintage clothing stores for 70s style clothing or designer outfits. This might be a bit costly, but you'll end up with a great look.

Making a costume is the easiest way to keep costume prices low. However, don't mistake homemade costumes with ones where store bought accessories are out of the question. In fact, special decals, bracelets, hats and other items can turn plain costumes into perfect ones.

The next step to finding a great costume in the price range you want and need is to think outside the box. Take a look at some of your favorite shows and consider inanimate objects like books or refrigerators. You can create some pretty amazing costumes with a simple box and some embellishments like paint and items from the hobby or craft store.

Group costumes are often very budget friendly, particularly if everyone in the group wears the same pants and tops. You may be able to get a discount by buying multiple items at once. This can go a long way to stretching your costume budget.

Think about the different people that work in groups like rock stars and school teachers. Don't forget about the sitcoms either. You could have each person in your group dress as a different character from a popular program. These costumes could be ideal, particularly for people that aren't crazy about dressing up in fantasy costumes.

Look around your house for things that can be added to costumes you purchase. Aluminum foil, egg cartons, packing material, boxes, and all kinds of other items can be added to costumes you buy online or at a local retail store to give them a very personalized look.

Don't rule out any kind of store for finding the right items. Women may want to check out the men's department for crazy ties or hats. Guys may want to visit sporting goods stores to find ready made work suits. Even grocery stores have aisles full of toys, perhaps including toy swords, wands, coloring books and more. If an adult is going as a baby, a grocery store can be ideal for finding pacifiers, baby food and even infant toys to accessorize costumes.

No matter what, have fun. With a bit of creativity you can create the perfect costume without spending a fortune.
