subject: A Cost Efficient Alternative To Air Conditioning [print this page] The days are getting longer, frosts are getting shorter and we will nearly see summer on the horizon. Long hot sleepy days and evenings sat in the lager garden of your local boozer with friends are beckoning, sadly many of us are still going to turn up for work across the summer months. Working thru the heat of the day in a hot workshop or factory can make us fear the hot weather, particularly if installing a pricey air con unit isn't a fiscal priority.
Air-con units aren't going to be practical in numerous commercial environments for one or two reasons. The 1st will be cost, particularly for SME's. Not only are air conditioner units dear in themselves, running them may cause unjustifiably extreme costs, they use up an unjustifiable quantity of energy and so produce high bills.
They are also impractical for factories and warehouses which require large doors or shutters to be left open as this allows the cool air being pumped into the building to escape. If air conditioning filters aren't cleaned regularly they can have health implications. Any germs in the air tend to end up being pumped round the building.
One alternate to air-con units is evaporative cooling systems, they need eighty percent less energy than typical air conditioning units which not only makes them cheaper, and also makes them more ecologically friendly too. They work by drawing air thru pads which are kept consistently wet, as the moisture is evaporated into the air, the temperature is reduced.
Together with being more energy and cost efficient, evaporative cooling systems have several benefits over aircon units. The 1st being that because they lower the temperature of their environment rather just blowing cold air into it, doors and windows can get left open without jeopardising the final potency. They need no structural adjustments to buildings as they can be fixed to a roof, window or wall. They don't require any chemicals to filter the air as it's taken naturally from outside of the building. This not only makes it better for the environment, it's fitter for those in the building as they are still inhaling the unpolluted air from outside. Bacteria can't form as the temperature of the water in the cooler is too low.
Though evaporative cooling systems are still less expensive than standard aircon units, times are hard in today's economic environment particularly for SME's. The Carbon Trust is a Presidency backed company whose target is to reduce carbon emissions by helping the United Kingdom become a low carbon economy thru the development of low carbon technologies.
They are currently operating an interest free loan scheme for SME's to help finance low carbon projects. As long as the project is helping lower carbon emissions in can be used for new equipment, to replace or repair old equipment, it can be used to pay for the equipment itself and the installation.
