At her peak at the young age of 33, actress Carole Lombard died in a tragic airplane crash. She was particularly known for her comedic roles and was one of the highest paid and most sought after actresses in the 30s. Born to a humble family in Fort Wayne, Indiana, thoughout her life, Lombard was known for having an earthy sense of humor and positive disposition. She was married to actor William Powell, 16 years her senior when she was 22. After her amicable divorce from Powell she married Clark Gable who proposed to her in a telephone booth in 1939. Man of the World She met her future husband William Powell while filming Man of the World and Ladies Man with him in the early 30s. This early Lombard and Powell picture has Powell playing a con-man who sets up to rob Lombards wealthy father until he falls in love with the daughter and rethinks his plot. He is pressured to go through with it by his co-conspirators and eventually loses Lombard only to regain her love many years later after he reformed. It is an early highlight for both as their romance shows real sparks onscreen and obviously off. No Man of Her Own This comedy featuring Clark Gable and Carole Lombard was their only film together. They play a married couple where Gable meets her while on the lam from gambling debts and the law. She is a small town librarian and after a joking coin flip over whether or not to marry, they do. Gable continues to gamble and lies to his wife who angrily shuffles his marked cards so he loses his next game. In anger at his wifes deviousness and his loss he leaves for Rio de Janeiro.
