subject: San Diego Hotel Rooms - Don't Assume You Have A Safe And Secure Hotel Room [print this page]

I am sitting here trying to make a decision on what to write about tonight and my wife is packing for her business trip tomorrow. Consequently it hit me, Hotel Security. Something everyone takes for granted. You're often exhausted from the trip and just want to lay down and rest, maybe get a shower in first. You in no way truly hear about any issues at hotels, so most individuals just assume that as soon as they are in the door and standing at the front counter, they're safe.

Some reasons you in no way actually hear about crime at hotels are that victims are mostly from out of town, so except if it is an extremely violent crime, there is little chance it will make the news. Furthermore, in the case of thefts, most people don't report it to the police, but rather to the hotel themselves, who try to manage it in a customer services manner by either reimbursing the customer or telling them that the hotel is not responsible for somebody going into their room and stealing from them.

These "how to's" will save you time the next morning, they could even save your life some day.

1. When you first enter your room, prop the door open, turn on the lights, and inspect the closets, bathroom, under the bed and behind the drapes. Mistakes do occur and we have all heard about somebody else being assigned to the same room.

2. Verify that all connecting doors, windows and sliding doors are locked. If at all possible, stay away from first floor rooms with sliding doors or direct entry to the outside.

3. As soon as you lock the door and attach the security chain, examine the diagram on the back of the door to analyze the closest exits and stairwells, then mentally plan your escape course. Look out the door, up and down the hall and find the exit signs, assess if they're illuminated.

4. Make certain you double lock your door and then attach the door chain. You may even bring a Portable Door Alarm with you to wake you in the event somebody attempts to enter unannounced. These are excellent items that are well worth their little investment. Use the peephole if somebody whom you were not expecting knocks.

All simple things that we really know we ought to do, we simply think to ourselves, "It can't happen to me". You lock your doors, put your seat belt on and look both ways when we cross the street. This is no different. A few additional minutes could change your life.
