After a tryout at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater, Hairspray opened on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre on Aug. 15, 2002. At the 2003 Tony Awards, Hairspray received nominations in 12 categories, winning eight for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, and Best Direction. The production ran for more than six years and 2,642 performances, and now you can see one of the most entertaining musicals of the year when you purchase MGM Grand at Foxwoods tickets.

Hairspray, a musical comedy by Mark O'Donnell, Thomas Meehan (book), Marc Shaiman (music, lyrics) and Scott Wittman (lyrics), was based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues. In 1962 in Baltimore, Md., teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream was to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. After Turnblad won a role on the show, she became a celebrity overnight. The teenager then launched a campaign to integrate the show.

If you're interested in seeing a Disney musical, then check out Disney on Ice-Princess Classics. The show opened on Aug. 30, 2002 in Lakeland. Princess Classics revolves around the stories of Cinderella, Jasmine, Ariel, Belle, Snow White, Aurora and Mulan. The first act tells the stories of Jasmine, Aurora, Ariel, Mulan, Snow White and Belle, while the entire second act consists only of Cinderella. Don't miss out on seeing spectacular enchanted castles and far-off lands in this magical, musical journey.

If you're not interested in seeing a musical in Hartford and are a UConn basketball fan, don't miss the team's Jan. 2 matchup against Notre Dame. In a recent contest against Boston University, Jerome Dyson led the 14th ranked Huskies with 22 points, surpassing 20 for the fourth time this season and leading the team in scoring for the fourth time. UConn cruised past BU 92-64. Stanley Robinson had 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Kemba Walker scored 15 and had 10 assists, and Gavin Edwards added 12 for the Huskies. After a mediocre start, UConn (5-1) took control of the game with a 17-3 run late in the first half. The Huskies had a 54-29 rebounding advantage and made 30 of 35 free throws.

First-year BU coach Patrick Chambers said, "They wear you down. That's what they did tonight. I thought we came out with great energy. We played hard the first 15 minutes, and then they went on a great spurt. They're going to do some good things in the Big East." Notre Dame (7-1) has played well this season. The Irish went on an 18-2 run which helped them beat Idaho State 80-70 on Dec. 1.

Luke Harangody led Notre Dame with 27 points and 12 rebounds to become the first Irish player with 2,000 career points and 1,000 rebounds. Idaho State trailed 40-37 at halftime, and closed to 47-42 in the second. But Notre Dame's Carleton Scott made his alley-opp basket, then Harangody hit one of his two 3-pointers, which helped secure the victory. Harangody and the Irish will have their hands full when they take on Dyson and the Huskies next month.
