Computer operating systems usually use extensions to assign appropriate applications to files. Errors related to file extensions are normally caused by absence of a relevant application to handle the file. However, the error could also be a result a problem with the registry. So to be able to resolve errors related to file extension, it is always good to have basic knowledge on the most common extensions. One such extension is PPS.

PPS is a PowerPoint Slideshow extension which is mostly associated with the Microsoft PowerPoint. However, not all versions of Microsoft PowerPoint files will have PPS extension; its only the 2003 version and earlier. Although the current version of PowerPoint normally uses PPSX extension, it can also open and be used to edit slideshows created and saved in PPS format.

PowerPoint Slideshow files are normally presentations designed in a series of pages known as slides. They are normally played in front of an audience to pass some certain information; either in seminars, meetings, lectures, workshops or even in product launches. Slides are created using texts, shapes, graphics, hyperlinks, graphs, charts, videos as well as sound. The audio can either be thematic background music or recorded narration to accompany the presentation.

During the design of the slideshow, the file is normally stored in a file with PPT extension. If you open a presentation with PPT extension, the file opens in a window with design tool bars, meaning that the show is not automated. Usually, when the presentation is designed and ready for view, it is saved in PPS format. PPS files will open in full screen, while slides, as well as the objects therein run in an automated motion according to the time and transition effects set during the design.

Apart from the Microsoft PowerPoint, other programs that can open files with PPS extension include the Word Perfect and the free PowerPoint Viewer application; both from the Microsoft, Viscom PowerPoint Viewer Active X and Portable PowerPoint Viewer. Sun Microsystems Open office org Impress, an open source and free application is also compatible with file extension PPS. Open Office Org Impress is not only functional in viewing PowerPoint slideshows, but can also be used in editing and converting PPS to other formats such as PPT.

However, it is worth noting that various applications and versions may not have the same features when creating and playing PowerPoint slideshows. Some objects may look different across different applications, or they may not be present at all.
