subject: Internet Marketing: Should You sell information services or commercial products? [print this page]

Originally I started affiliate marketing with the idea of selling a huge number of commercial products such as electrical items, books as an affiliate. I thought 4-6%commissions were going to be ok. The biggest problem though was my competition. My main suppliers were Amazon and Buy.com, I literally couldn't get ranking. One site I would like to mention made page one on Google for the keyword search quite easily. However the high I could get was number 5, however Amazon was 1. Sales were dismal. You're probably saying the site must have been ordinary. It wasn't. Three months later I decided to change the product I was marketing on that site from a commercial product to a information product (an ebook). It was only a fraction of the commercial product cost but had a better commission. Guess what the ebook sold and my mailing list for the site increased substantially. I have since placed the commercial product on the site as a secondary item and have even been able sell a number of those. This site has infact become my blueprint for all my websites. The point I am trying to make here is that especially when you are starting in affiliate marketing the easier the sales the better to help you learn your skills. Information services are the easiest by far!
