subject: Creating An Organic Baby Nursery [print this page]

There is a big concern in today's society for living a natural and healthy lifestyle. People live "green" by avoiding products that are produced with dangerous chemicals and treatments that might cause harm. They seek organic products that are as true to nature as possible. With these large trend in society, it is no surprise that new parents are wanting to make their babies an organic baby nursery. Several options should be considered to make the nursery as organic and safe for baby as possible.

Organic Baby Nursery

Flooring

Babies spend a lot of time playing on their tummy and crawling around, so parents should make sure their flooring is safe. Wood flooring is a better choice than carpet, which can harbor dust, germs, and VOCs, Volatile Organic Compounds. Soften up the wood floors with a trendy rug made out of all-natural fibers such as hemp or bamboo. An added bonus is that wood flooring will last much longer than carpeting, especially with kids in the house.

Paint

Many paints have a very strong odor and put out VOCs. Choose a non-toxic paint in the color of your choice. It is also beneficial to try to paint the baby's nursery as far in advance of the baby's arrival as possible, so the paint has longer to set.

Nursery Furniture

Fill your organic baby nursery with natural wood furniture, rather than particleboard or veneer. Pay close attention to the stain and finish as well to make sure they are also non-toxic. Bee's wax is a great looking organic finish for baby nursery furniture.

Bedding

Traditional mattresses and bedding contain more chemicals than most people could imagine. These materials will be right up against the baby when they sleep every night and therefore could be considered the most important to go organic. Organic baby nursery bedding is made of natural fibers, filled with organic cotton or other organic materials, and is dyed with non-toxic, natural dyes.

Organic Baby Nursery

Diapers

Diapers are probably most people's least favorite way to go organic because so many hate the idea of using cloth diapers. If you can tolerate it, find cloth diapers in organic, natural fibers. Two of the most popular fibers for organic diapers are organic cotton and hemp. In addition to protect the baby from chemicals in disposable diapers, this will also help reduce the 3.4 million tons going to already overflowing landfills every year in the United States.
