During the Dutch reign the canal was put to use as a supply route and it is still being used, though for less official purposes. A tourist of today can experience what it was like to travel the water by either hiring a boat, or take a leisurely ride on a bicycle. Cutting across Negombo this canal cuts its way through Sea Street, well known as Main Street.
