subject: The Damaging Impact Of Engine Heat And Part Failure [print this page]

Engine heat is a destructive element underneath the hoods of many high performance cars. It's impact on fuel mileage and early component failure might be expensive. Fortunately automotive accessories are available which will significantly reduce the heat in engine compartments and improve engine performance.

The quickest reduction in engine compartment temperature can be achieved by applying exhaust wraps on the exhaust manifolds or headers. This by itself can lower engine compartment temperatures by half. In most situations, automotive enthusiasts can quickly apply the exhaust wrap rolls without any assistance.

There are quite a few exhaust wraps available in stores. The highest rated exhaust wraps are made from pulverized lava and are rated to handle the hottest temperatures. Their less expensive glass fiber cousins offer lower ratings and are not able to handle as much heat.

Separate component thermal shields are available to protect individual engine parts. The effect of heat on batteries, starters, turbos and other parts can lead to early failure and may lead to costly repair or replacement. Created from similar products as exhaust wrap rolls, these components may be shielded from extreme engine temperatures which will result in much longer duty life.

Rubber hoses and lines in the engine compartment may also benefit from being protected from the damaging impact of high temperatures. Under extreme temperatures, these hoses can crack or fail. Modern shields are now available which are both attractive and easy to install.

For hard to wrap engine parts and voids, thermal tape is available to minimize the transfer of engine compartment heat. Thermal tape is great for radiant heat control only, and in many cases is rated to manage a minimum of 800-degrees Fahrenheit. With a specially designed adhesive, these products look appealing if properly applied.

Large sections, such as floorboards, may be protected from heat using aluminized mylar matting. This matting comes in sheets which have been pre-cut to a variety of widths. These mats are extremely helpful for industrial vehicles where the engine is located near the cab.

Many automotive and commercial vehicles can gain from increased thermal protection. Adequately minimizing heat can lead to extended engine component life and horsepower. Even the gas mileage of most vehicles could be increased by the installation of thermal protection products.
