subject: Why Use Low Voltage Dichroic Lamps? [print this page] Author: Art Icklewright Author: Art Icklewright
Dichroic is derived from a Greek word that means two coloured, and where dichroic lamps are concerned, it refers to their ability to split light of different types - they reflect / transmit visible light forward out of the lamp, while not reflecting the heat producing infrared light in that direction. This splitting and selective reflecting is achieved by a multi-faceted dichroic coating inside the lamp. Often therefore, these types of lamps are referred to as Multifaceted Reflector (MR) lamps. For example the popular MR16 halogen reflector lamps fit into this category so called because the front diameter is 16 eighths of an inch (two inches). Typically therefore, these lamps are compact, and so can be used in a multitude of situations where traditional bulbs would be obtrusive or simply not fit. Adding a UV filter / stop glass on these halogen bulbs can also stop any bleaching effects of ultra-violet light which again adds to their flexibility of use. Also, since they are halogen lamps, they last longer than other incandescent lamps because of a chemical reaction between the tungsten filament and the halogens that actually regenerates the filament, instead of allowing it to evaporate and coat the inside of the lamp. The halogen aspect of the lamp also means that they need and have a tough quartz front. Although they are durable in this respect, its still always wise to avoid any knocks or impacts to ensure their operational integrity. These dichroic lamps are very energy efficient they have high efficacy because the output is high compared to the voltage used to produce it. Applications Their small size, flexibility, clear intense light, long life, energy saving properties (low voltage high efficacy), and the fact that some potentially damaging types of light have been filtered and reflected out of them make them perfect for use in retail situations e.g. track lighting and focused display lighting, for accent lighting commercially or domestically, for recessed or ceiling lights.
