subject: Electrolysis Hair Removal [print this page]

Electrolysis is one of the hottest methods of hair removal. It has many advantages over the laser hair removal system. Undesired hair growth as on ladies upper lip and arms is usually caused as a result of hereditary reasons or due to hormonal levels and also by certain drugs and conditions. There are several techniques available to remove unwanted hair like waxing, bleaching as well as laser removal. Electrolysis might be possibly the only lasting one and the safest. It has fewer side effects as well.

Some people who do not find laser techniques suitable for them opt for electrolysis hair removal. Electrolysis is especially great for darker skinned people with grey or blond hair as different techniques are not so effective for them.

The electrolysis procedure for removing undesired hair was first used in 1875 by an ophthalmologist named Dr. Charles E. Michael on a individual to remove an ingrown eye lash. Since, this process has been modified to get rid of unwanted hair from any part of the body.

To perform electrolysis, a specialized needle known as an epilator is used to direct short wave radio wavelengths or electro chemical currents or both into an individual hair follicle at a time and in accordance with its depth, thickness and direction of growth. The current destroys the follicle that is the growth centre of the hair attacking the dermal papilla. Hence hair can't ever grow back again. A specific probe is used next to pierce the follicle and the hair is pulled out using forceps without causing any pain to the person.

Electrolysis is known to be a everlasting method of hair removal. The Food and Drug Administration and the American Medical Association recognize only electrolysis as a permanent method of hair removal. It has little side effect typically. Contrary to the usual worry of discomfort we have associated to electrolysis sessions, there is only a prickling discomfort at most in electrolysis and no blood loss whatsoever. Even that can be prevented with topical anesthesia.

Besides the permanence aspect, electrolysis can be a better and safer choice than many other techniques like bleaching and waxing which may cause irritation, agony and even lasting discoloration of skin which is not true using electrolysis. Even laser system is more restricted than electrolysis. Laser treatment is restricted to only light skinned individuals with dark hair as laser operates by targeting and destroying pigment it can burn people with dark skin and not give the complete results in the case of people with light unwanted hair.

Electrolysis is a lengthy process though. It is typically completed in repeated sessions as only growing hair is targeted and hair does not grow all together at a similar rate. One may need between 15 to 30 sessions. It is also costly. A 30 minute session can cost$ 45.

But even then it is the most preferred method for as discussed above it is permanent, safe and less painful than most techniques and there is no fear of skin damage or discoloration from chemicals.
