subject: What Is The Difference Between A Small Local Courier Company And Fedex? [print this page]

If a company is beginning their search for 3pl providers, they are going to notice something right away. They will see that pretty much all logistics and delivery companies can be divided into one of two categories. These are the smaller local courier companies which are privately owned and who only do business over a certain area, and the large international companies which are among the largest and most recognizable brands in the world. It then becomes important for people looking for a shipping company to understand what separates these two types of companies, so that they can hopefully find one which is going to better suit their business's needs.

The large companies like FedEx have a distinct advantage when it comes to making shipments to international destinations. That is because these companies regularly do business with every country on the planet. They have the delivery networks with the range to make sure that you can deliver goods to anywhere on the planet. If you try and place an order for international shipping with a smaller local courier company, they are only going to end up outsourcing that delivery to a company like FedEx anyway. Therefore, you can save yourself a great deal of money by taking your international shipping needs to the larger company in the first place.

The problem with those huge international companies is that each of their clients simply becomes a number to them. When you work with a small local courier company instead, you are going to receive a much more personalized type of service. They will pay attention to the details within your company, and you will likely get to know the people that are handling your orders. This type of business relationship usually leads to much higher degrees of customer satisfaction.

The rates that are available between these two types of companies can also differ, but reflect their strengths and weaknesses as well. FedEx and companies like it are typically able to offer much better rates on international and air shipping. On the other hand, because of their much lower costs local companies can sometimes offer much better pricing on local deliveries or small scale messenger services which you might use them for.

There is no hard rule which dictates which of these types of companies is better. They are simply different, and which type will be better for you depends on what type of company you are a part of.
