subject: What Are Fibroids? Can It Be Cured? [print this page]

The growth of fibroids is common in the reproductive system of women especially during the pregnancy stage when there is an extra production of estrogen. These are actually non-cancerous tumors that develop in the uterus. The size of the tumor can be as small as the pea but can grow as big as the melon. An approximate percentage of 20% of women are prone to fibroids. However, it is rare for a teenager to experience this kind of tumor.

Women who have fibroids do not feel any symptoms but others can experience heavy bleeding, abdominal pain and even infertility. The main cause of fibroid is still undiscovered but many experts believe that the formation of fibroid is catapulted by the hormone estrogen. This therefore explains that women in their 30s mostly encounter fibroids because of their high estrogen level.

According to studies and statistics, black women are more prone to fibroids than white women. The reason for this is still not clear to many. Weight is also another factor on the formation of fibroids. Women who weigh more than 70kg are more likely to experience fibroids. This is because bigger women have high estrogen women.

In the early days, birth control pills are also said to be the cause of fibroids. The pills that time contained higher levels of estrogens while the pills of today have longer estrogen levels. Also, pills with the combination of estrogen and progesterone are believed to help prevent the formation of fibroids.

Fibroids are grouped into different types: the intramural, subserous, submucous, and the cervical. The difference between these types is the tumor's location from which the tumor develops. In the intramural type, the tumor grows in the womb's wall and this is considered as the most common fibroid type. The subserous on the other hand grows from the outer layer of the womb. The tumor that develops under the womb's inner lining is called the submucous. And lastly, as the name suggests, the tumor of the cervical type grows in the wall of the cervix.

Though the cause of the fibroids is not yet known, there are still things that you need to do in order to prevent them. Make sure to have proper food intake and exercise. A study suggests that women who eat more green vegetables than mean have lesser potential of fibroids. Also, monitor your weight in order to lessen the estrogen level in your body.
