subject: Handicapping System Tips to Pick Winners in Horse Races [print this page]

Trying to pick the winner of a horse race is often difficult because so many factors are involved. There are many people involved in a horse race and each animal is a unique creature. Put the animals and people together and try to sort it all out and it seems like chaos. That is why a good handicapping system that makes order of the chaos is so important.

While it appears that the trainer's intention, jockey's ability, horse's form, and pace of the race may all be important, just how important is each one compared to the other? For instance, you may see that a trainer has a 30% win average on the first race after a claim. In today's race she has a horse she just claimed. Does this mean that if the horse goes off at odds that are long enough to show a profit on 30% winners (any odds over 2-1 in this case) is a good bet?

At first glance it appears that is a correct assumption. However, there are many other factors to be considered that may change that 30% to a higher or lower percentage. If you only focus on those kind of statistics and zero in on one horse, you are not getting a clear and accurate picture of the race. A good horse racing handicapping system looks at many factors and puts them together to paint a clearer picture.

Therefore, I recommend that any horse racing system should look at more than one factor. Otherwise, you are simply playing spot plays. While the beauty of spot plays is that, as the name implies, they are easy to spot, they are also usually over bet and you can't make money on them. The truth is, there is no easy way to find good bets or easy money at the horse races. People who really make money betting on horse races usually work very hard at it and it is an up and down ride.

The sad truth is that the more complicated a horse racing pick, the more likely it will pay well. If a winner is too obvious, then it becomes a prohibitive favorite and is bet down to the point where you just won't make any money playing such horses. A good handicapping system will weigh the factors so the right amount of importance is placed on each one and then combine them to point out the best bet.
