subject: Slow Pc Tips To Speed Up Performance [print this page]

Computers that run slowly are a headache for most computer users. Often individuals get irritated by slow boot and response times. A computer that is not performing as it should is upsetting. Most people want to be able to improve the slow performance of their computer without costly upgrades to the hardware. They look for simple tips that actually work. Here are five slow pc tips that will improve the speed and performance of the computer. These tips are really simple that any type of computer user can do them.

Defragment the Hard Drive Occasionally

It is not difficult to defragment the hard drive of the computer. It is a safe, simple, and non intrusive process that any computer expert or non professional can do by following these procedures:

Click on the My Computer icon on the desktop.

Right click on main PC drive. For most users, it is the drive labeled as Local disk (C).

From the menu, choose Properties, then choose Tools, and finally choose Defragment Now.

Click on the Defragment button to start the process.

If you have not done this in a long time, or if this is the first time the hard drive has been defragmented, the process will take a long time to complete. Be patient. It is best not to run any other programs or use the Internet while the hard drive is being defragmented. This will only slow down the process. In the end, it is worth the wait since the computer speed will greatly increase.

Frequently Clear the Web Browser

All web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Google Chrome have a cache that stores the temporary Internet files, cookies, and browsing history. These files slow down the computer by taking up unnecessary space on the hard drive. It is a good idea to clear the cache, cookies, and temporary files often to increase computer speed.

Keep the Registry Clean

Registry cleaners are available to help keep the computer registry nice and neat. The cleaner will remove any old and useless references in the windows registry, therefore increasing computer speed.

The Computer Needs to be Restarted

Because broad band Internet is so popular it is widely available and defined by the always on Internet connection, most computer users think that their computer can be left running indefinitely as well. This is a mistake and not the case at all. You should reboot your computer from time to time in order to improve your PC performance.

The Recycle Bin Must Be Emptied

Many people use the recycle bin to get rid of old and unwanted files. Often they forget that it has to be emptied to completely remove the files from the computer. If the recycle bin is not emptied regularly, these files remain on the computer taking up space. This will often lead to a slow running computer. Empty the recycle bin at least once a week, depending on how often you use it. This will free up space on the computer which allows it to run faster and smoother.
