subject: How to keep your loose gemstones safe and secure? [print this page]

The loose rubies, sapphires and emeralds are not available cheaply. This means that they are not easy to be replaced with new ones, in case they are damaged. Hence, it is important to store them carefully.

Most of the times if the rubies, emeralds or sapphires come in contact with other gemstones or jewelry items; they can sustain some serious damage.

Hence, it is important to store the loose gemstones properly in a way that they are not damaged in the process.

First of all here is a look at some things which can be used for storing the loose gemstones:

A couple of clean velvet pieces.

Some flat, yet long boxes.

A soft to touch towel

Some cotton cloth pieces

Now, here is look at how to use these things to store your loose gemstones safely:

The best way to store the loose sapphires or other gemstones is to keep them inside the boxes, in which they arrived. The original boxes used for shipping the gemstones are very soft from inside. The boxes have cushioned walls that offer a proper protection. Also, this way the gemstones will not come into contact with other items, thereby avoiding any scratches or other damages.

Another fantastic way of storing the loose emeralds, rubies or sapphires is to use the easily available velvet jewelry bags. In case, you do not have any jewelry boxes, you can simply go ahead and wrap the jewelry in a piece of velvet. This will offer full protection to the loose gemstones. In case, the velvet pieces are not enough for storing all the loose gemstones individually, you should wrap the pieces together inside a single piece of velvet. Afterward, the velvet piece has to be put inside a larger jewelry box. You should make sure that the box is not moved way, too much to make sure that there is no friction between the various loose gemstones.

You should also make sure that the loose gemstones are not exposed to humidity. This is because the various gemstones respond badly when exposed to a lot of humidity. In fact some of the gemstones can get disfigured if they are placed permanently in a damp place.

Make sure that the loose gemstones are not stored inside plastic bags. This is because such bags easily trap the moisture for an indefinite period. The moisture inside the bags should be removed before you the loose gemstones are stored inside.
