Summer vacations along the coast of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia are filled with a variety of nature-related activities such as shell collecting, exploring tide pools and harvesting seafood.

Other seashore recreation such as kite flying, hiking, photography and other activities offer beach enthusiasts a chance to get outside and enjoy coastal sights.

Along oceanfront beaches shell collectors find cockles, moon snails, whelks, conchs, scallops, angel wings and other attractive treasures.

Exploring tide pools of the region is a fun past time. This is a wonderful activity for kids of all ages, although the plain truth is that people of every age love exploring the shallows and learning about the creatures that live there.

Catching bait for fishing is popular in these Atlantic states. Fishermen use cast nets, small seines, traps or other equipment to catch minnows, bait fish, crabs, shrimp and other sea creatures.

Each of these 3 states have areas where shellfish harvesting is allowed. Common shellfish of the area includes quahog clams, oysters and blue mussels.

The bays and coastlines of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia are excellent places to practice photography. Subjects include sunrises and sunsets, seascapes, wave actions, birds, marine mammals and people.

Birdwatching is very popular, especially along shorelines where there is a wide range of birds such as gulls, terns, oyster catchers, herons, egrets, pelicans, ibises, plovers, sandpipers and other shorebirds.

Flying kites is an excellent hobby along the coast. To fly a kite successfully, enthusiasts need wind and open space, both of which are usually plentiful along the coast.

Delaware, Maryland and Virginia have thousands of hiking trails. Most state parks and national seashores have trails which offer a range of scenery.
