subject: Find Ways To Quit Smoking [print this page]

Most people who do smoke, have thought about quitting nicotine. The problem many people face is knowing where to begin and how to deal with getting over that initial first step. While there's a lot of information available about smoking and the different ways to quit smoking, knowing a few simple rules can greatly increase your chances of success and ensure that you'll never buy another pack again.

Create reminders for yourself of the reasons you want to quit and be sure to check them whenever you feel an urge to smoke. The negative effects of cigarettes are widely known nowadays, with hundreds of cancer causing chemicals in both first and second hand smoke. Many studies even report that nicotine is on par, if not worse than cocaine and heroin in terms of addiction. Quitting smoking is a benefit not only to your own health, but the health of your friends and family as well.

Ask those closest to you to help you stay on track. Everyone loves a success story so be sure to inform people of your goals. Be sure to include even those who still smoke and avoid any situation where you might be tempted to fall back in to the habit. Ask a non-smoker friend to talk with you during breaks, or times when you would normally need to smoke. Your friends and family will always support you with your decision to quit and are an essential part with helping you stick to your goals.

Create a healthy habit to help you fill the void when not smoking. This can be as simple as taking a drink of water or chewing gum. One of the biggest problems many smokers have is not having anything to do once they decide to quit. Many feel the need to be doing something with their hands which is why taking sips of water or a similar action can help keep your mind occupied and not thinking about smoking.

Try changing your diet to help reduce stress and improve health. Many smokers may start eating junk food as a replacement to smoking, which can just cause more health problems and lead to relapse. Snacking on raw vegetables is a great way to improve your diet and also replace the act of smoking. Also you should try to eat a lot of small meals spread throughout the day. This will help balance your energy and reduce those nicotine cravings.

Start exercising. This can be hard for many soon to be ex-smokers, but science has shown that even just 15-20 minutes of brisk exercise a day can have hours of lasting benefits. Start small with a brisk walk during lunch or basic calisthenics in the morning. This will help your body reset and kick the need for nicotine.

If going cold turkey isn't for you, there are many options available, from nicotine gum to patches, and even hypnotherapy has been successful for many. Be sure to talk to your doctor about which treatment options are best for you.

The decision to quit is always a good one to make, but getting the results can be stressful. Stick with your decision and get over the first few steps by following this article and pretty soon you'll never crave another cigarette again.
