Only a handful was able to keep their jobs but still this was a crucial step towards the transition of a housewife to a career wife. By the mid-20th century, less and less women left the workforce. Those who did leave came up with work from home ideas like baking, with their neighbors as customers, or direct selling which only required a few hours from home.

The 1970s saw the change on the mindsets of women. Colleges and graduate schools were flooded with applications from females and soon they were entering male dominated professions like Medicine, Law and Business. Although women like Elizabeth Bragg, the first woman to earn an Engineering Degree, and Arabella Mansfield, who was the first woman to pass the bar exam, both earned their degrees in the late 19th century, the societys discriminative response towards womens capability to excel in these fields were still shallow.

Womens rise towards the top decision makers was still far from reach in the early 1980s. To earn this rank, women like Mary Kay Ash, who had to quit her job when passed over for a promotion due to her gender, together with her husband brainstormed for work from home ideas and eventually founded the Mary Kay Inc., a multi-level marketing company with a total sales volume of 2.6 billion in 2008.

European females, on the other hand, promoted for women to be part of higher positions in politics and management or business. This effort in the 1980s resulted to a rise in the number of women politicians with 20.9% in Europe and an average of 18.4% worldwide by 2009 with 63 being elected or appointed as heads of state.

Discrimination

Being considered as inferior to men, female workers are often victims of racial and sexual discrimination. Employers believe that women, once they get married, would drop out from work to have kids. This kind of mindset hindered women to rise on the corporate and political ladder. This is evident in the higher echelon of the United States government until Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice, the first female and the first African-American woman that served as secretary of state respectively.

With the advancement of technologythrough internetwomen have found ways to be their own boss.
