subject: Strategies For Passing The Civil Service Accountant Exam [print this page]

There are several strategies you should use in order to pass your exam if you are planning on taking the Civil Service Accountant Exam at the federal, state or local level.

The first strategy should be to find out exactly what will be on your exam. Many Civil Service Accountant exams differ in subject areas depending on the job you are applying. They may also differ for different states and local governments that require different subject areas. Your first step should be to identify what areas you will be tested on. You should visit the agencys website or call the office to get the information that you need.

Your next strategy should be to obtain study material. Do not gather numerous accounting books and just start studying. This is information overload and you will get overwhelmed. Find one or two study guides that focus on the accountant exam. Your agency may be able to provide example study material. However, this may not be enough to adequately prepare for your exam.

Once you begin studying for your Civil Service Accountant Exam, identify the areas that are your strong points and weak points. Focus on the weak points. You may need to find several accounting books or look it up on the internet to get more information to help you study those areas more in-depth.

Get a good nights sleep the night before the exam. You will find that being well rested will help greatly.

While taking your actual exam, make sure you read and understand the directions. Make sure you also understand the scoring. For example, if you are not penalized for incorrect answers, your strategy should be to answer all questions. If you are penalized, you may decide not to guess for questions that you dont know.

Manage your time. Make sure you are fully aware of how much time you have left. Dont spend too much time on one question. Either guess and move on or skip the question and come back to it.

For multiple choice questions, eliminate as many wrong choices as you can. You can then choose the best of the remaining choices if you need to guess.

Make sure your answers are reasonable. Some questions allow you to plug your answer in and see if it is correct.

Follow your instincts. Your first instinct is usually correct. Dont change your answer unless you know it is correct.

By following these strategies, you will improve your chances of getting a high score on your Civil Service Accountant Exam. Remember, it is so important in this economy to have the highest score possible as you will most likely be competing against a large number of individuals. A high score will greatly increase the likelihood of getting your dream job.
