A fear for flying can have dramatic effects on the personal and business life of an individual. Its not simply inconvenient, it can keep a person from enjoying family events and can limit business and career opportunities. The phobia is defined as an individual's intense and debilitating fear of boarding and flying on all forms of aircraft, including planes and helicopters. Also called aerophobia or aviatophobia, it is actually fairly common, with as many as one in six Americans suffering from the issue.

The symptoms of the fear setting in closely resemble those exhibited by other phobias and fears. For instance, the person will begin sweating and shaking intensely, and often suffers from both stomach pains and sometimes heart palpitations. Other symptoms include become flushed, disoriented, and an inability to think clearly.

The causes of this condition will vary from person to person. For instance, experiencing a terrifying flight might trigger the problem. Flights with hard turbulence or being forced into an emergency landing might embed a deep fear of experiencing the issue again. Other psychological or subconscious issues might be to blame as well.

Usually, coping and overcoming the fear is difficult and requires time and patience. Great ideas include participating in either group seminars or support groups where a person can discuss and deal with issues in the presence of other sufferers. Also consider both cognitive therapy and various medications prescribed by a doctor.

Unfortunately, an individual with a fear of flying is often living a very limited life. Many opportunities, both business and personal, are often put aside because of this inability to travel by aircraft. It is often a good idea for a sufferer to speak with qualified mental health professionals who can advise them.
