subject: Importance of a well –balanced preschool curriculum [print this page]

Preschoolers are always learning something new everyday! They learn simply by being involved in the surroundings around them and having fun while doing it. There are so many ways to make education fun and not all tiring and boring for preschoolers. An effective preschool curriculum selects things that the preschooler is already interested in and makes learning interactive and easy.

Besides laying emphasis on academics preschool curriculum must also focus on the proper development of the child's emotional intelligence it takes care of the fact that the child is able to express his or her emotions appropriately, correctly interpret emotions of the people around and can understand the triggers and outcomes of certain emotions.

Thus, a preschool program must teach kids about these aspects:

self-control

persistence

the ability to motivate oneself

confidence

optimism

self-understanding (knowing what emotions one is feeling)

empathy

the art of listening to others and really hearing them

A preschooler must also be given opportunity to learn about social education. During the last two decades there's been a lot of research that indicates - unless kids acquire minimal social skills by the time they're six years old they have a high probability of being at risk throughout their life. Thus, preschool programs must include regular formal and informal assessment of the children's progress on acquiring social skills.

Children at this stage love to play thus they need lots of playtime. A preschool curriculum must also take this factor into consideration. A preschool must give children ample opportunities to play indoor as well as outdoors; playing alone, with peers, with teachers and other caregivers. In a nutshell, an ideal playtime should be time for fun, exploration, creative and physical development.

From the abovementioned factors it is clear that a well-balanced preschool curriculum assists your kid in adjusting to the demands of the elementary school. Thus, before sending your child to the nearest preschool do a bit of research on the curriculum and the teachers of the preschool. A preschool program's quality also depends on the qualifications of the teachers and staff. Teachers with four-year degrees and specialization in early childhood are undeniably better prepared and equipped to make meaningful relationships with their students and assist them in acquiring all the important skills to become a well-grown, strong and healthy adult.
