subject: The Many Different Martial Arts Styles [print this page]

It would take months to even finish reading the literature on every type of martial arts style, let alone taking the time to learn them. There are hundreds of different martial arts styles, and each and every one of them has their merits. However, not all are suitable for every person. Some of the most common include karate, ju-jitsu, tai-kwon-do and aikido. But that is only an extremely small percentage of the many different types that exist throughout the world. With that said, it can be a difficult choice when it comes to finding the style that best suits your needs. And for this exact reason, many people are instead choosing to start their martial arts journey with simple self defense tactics.

This is an excellent way to get into the business of martial arts. Since it can be almost impossible to choose the right form for you without any experience, it will allow you to learn some basics and figure out what works best. Self defense tactics borrow from many different martial arts styles. You would be hard-pressed to find a self defense strategy that only uses karate or jujitsu. Although these martial arts can be great for self defense, alone, they are not enough. You never know how an attacker will behave, so your predetermined moves might not be enough to save you.

But if you know some of the basic self defense tactics, then you can be sure to leave your attacker on the ground. One of the best parts of this strategy is that the moves aren't even very hard to learn. Even if you don't have a background in martial arts, it will take only a few minutes to learn these amazing moves that will allow you to bring down someone twice your size. Simple moves such as the Claw, can be used by anyone to knock down someone who is heavier. This simple self defense tactic is accomplished by simply pushing on the attackers chin in an upwards manner. Once their head is pushed back, gravity takes over and they will not be able to stand. This will give you enough time to run away.

Running should always be the main option if you are attacked by a stranger. Since criminals do not wish to draw attention to themselves for fear of getting caught, they likely will not chase you. So if you know just one move that can give you enough time to get away, you might have saved your own life. So don't let yourself get overwhelmed by all the many different martial arts styles out there. If you only want to learn how to defend yourself, you do not need to concern yourself with them. However, many people who start learning self defense end up becoming interested in martial arts down the road. Whatever your reasons for starting, you are surely on a bright path of increased self confidence and self esteem. And you certainly won't fear walking down that alley after dark any more.
