In 1987, Pope John Paul II visited this cathedral, which also holds the bones of eight New Orleans bishops. The cathedral stands proudly - even after fires, bombs, and hurricanes struck at it and have three impressive spires pointing towards the sky, with a clock under the highest one. Inside, the interior is welcoming in its simplistic beauty with the front of the sanctuary having a gilded work entitled Sacrifice of the Lamb of God hangs over the altar and throughout the sanctuary statues of the saints peer down from their pedestals. Adorned above are the flags of countries that once ruled New Orleans. The life of St. Louis is depicted on the lower windows on both sides of the church.
