subject: Guide For Buyers Searching For The Right Down Comforter [print this page]

. Down comforters are comforters filled with either duck or goose down. You can get one for a wide range of prices depending on what fill and cover you choose.

When you shop for a down comforter, be aware of your options. The first to consider is fill power.

You may be wondering what a fill power rating is. This is the number that indicates how fluffy your comforter is going to be. You want something that is at least 550 or above. Anything above 800 is super luxurious.

You also want to consider thread count. Higher numbers are better than lower numbers here too. Thread count measures how many threads are in the fabric of the comforter cover per square inch.

Down is a natural material. Generally, duck down is less expensive than goose down, because it has a noticeable smell. Goose down is premium down and is basically odor free.

Some down comforters have a mix of down (the fine fuzz that doesn't have spines) and feathers. If you have a comforter with feathers, this adds firmness, but feathers can also stick out and poke you. Your comforter won't be as soft if it has feathers, either.

Higher priced comforters will have mostly or exclusively down. If you can find comforters with down from Siberian geese, this is the best type. Comforters made with this will be super-heavy and thick, and last a long time.

Allergies can make some people unwilling to consider down. Unfortunately, they are deciding against the product without realizing they don't have to. Most allergies aren't to the down but to the mites that can be in the down. If you have an allergy, choose a hypoallergenic brand of comforter such as TempraKON or Hyperclean.
