subject: Applying To Medical School: Overview Of The Process [print this page]

Preparation, energy and time are needed when applying to medical school. The admissions process does not happen overnight. It is actually a rather lengthy process that can take up to a year. If you submit the AMCAS application in June, use the summer and fall to complete your secondary's; have the interview in the fall or winter; you can expect it to be finalized sometime between October and March. You are looking at almost a year for the entire process.

These schools look for those who are smart and have motivation. Medical schools normally accept about half of those who apply. About ninety-six percent of them successfully acquire the M. D. Degree.

MCAT testing is part of the admissions process for any medical school. Prior to being admitted, this test will have to be taken. The application to medical school can be submitted before taking the test but will not be complete until the scores are received. Also pay attention to any additional course requirements that they school may have such as calculus, humanities or biochemistry courses. Make sure that you meet all the necessary requirements for admittance into the medical school.

The ideal situation would be to have all the prerequisites complete before applying. During the year before you apply, take the MCAT sometime in April.

The application that is filled out for medical school is known as the AMCAS. It is similar to applications for undergraduate admissions. June is when the AMCAS application is will begin to be accepted.

After selecting the school that you want to attend on the application, a second application will probably be sent to you. This secondary application is a way for the schools to ask questions that pertain to that particular school.

In order to be accepted by the school, an interview at that school must be done. It is a way for the school to determine if the person represented on paper is the person you really are. It is also used to see if you really want to attend that school. Interviews normally start in September and end in March.

The admissions decisions span the entire time of the interview session. It is possible to know as early as October if you are accepted or not. If a rolling admission cycle is not used, then the decisions will be made at one time and announced in March. You will only gain admission if you receive an invitation to interview and do good presenting yourself.

As stated previously the admissions process for medical school is rather lengthy and can last eleven months. This is from the time you take the MCAT to the decision on being admitted.
