subject: Patients Need To Prepare Physically And Mentally For Liposuction Surgery [print this page]

The first consultation with the surgeon is very important for the patient to begin to prepare physically and mentally for liposuction surgery. There is a list of different things that should be done before surgery. Preparing for what to expect and how to take care of the body afterwards is essential.

The surgeon will need the complete medical history of the patient. This is a very important safety precaution. The surgeon needs to know what kind of vitamins and medications the patient takes. The will also need to know if they smoke, have high blood pressure, allergies, or blood clotting problems.

Many patients are worried about scarring. Surgeon have become very skilled at keeping scarring, if there is any, unnoticeable. But the surgeon needs to know if the patient is prone to form excessive scars. This can limit their ability to make the scars completely unnoticeable.

Surgeon will generally not treat patients who have diabetes, heart or lung disease, or if they have recently had surgery in the same general area they desire to be worked on. These conditions add a large amount of risk to the surgery that could prove to be fatal. An surgeon is usually not willing to perform an elective surgery on someone with any of these conditions.

The surgeon will give their patients a list of criteria that will need to be completed before the surgery. They are asked not to take Aspirin or any products containing Ibuprofen two weeks prior to the procedure. These medications are natural blood thinners, which is not healthy for surgery.

Normal blood clotting is important during surgery and if the blood is too thin that is unable to take place. Thin blood also tends to increase the risk of bleeding and bruising during and after surgery. Tylenol or anything containing acetaminophen is allowed if needed. These medications do not have a negative effect during surgery.

Any patients who smoke regularly may be considered for the surgery. However, they will be asked to quite for two weeks before and after the surgery is performed. Smoking constricts the blood vessels. It also creates a strain on the normal healing process needed after the surgery.

Patients will be required to abstain from alcohol for two weeks before and after the surgery as well. They should eat less salt and drink more water. Less salt helps to diminish swelling after surgery and plenty of water helps to flush any toxins from the body.

The patient will need to stop taking any vitamins or herbs two weeks prior to surgery. They should also plan to fill any prescriptions before the surgery date, especially pain medication proscribed by the surgeon for this procedure. The patient will be required to arrange for someone to take them home. Someone will also need to assist the patient for the next 24 hours after surgery.
