subject: Unusual Weight Gain After Liposuction Is A Risk For Those Who Don't Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle [print this page]

It is perhaps not commonly known that people can gain weight after they have had liposuction. Although fat won't come back into the same area, the rest of the body is still susceptible to weight gain. If a person gains weight after the surgery, this can sometimes lead to unnatural or unattractive fat distribution on the person's body. A healthy lifestyle is key to preventing this misfortune.

Liposuction is only really safe and effective for people who are already very healthy and are within a certain healthy weight range. Usually they have liposuction in a certain area to sculpt certain problem areas of the body where little pockets of fat stubbornly hang on despite weight loss efforts.

Fat can be removed from almost anywhere on a person's body as long as the fat is superficial and near the surface. Deep fat, such as the fat that surrounds the organs, cannot be removed through liposuction.

Some of the common areas of fat removal are the belly, thighs, and hips. Removing fat from these areas can make a person look very fit and thin, even though the total amount of fat removed is very small.

The fat is removed by actually breaking the fat cells and then sucking them out. Once they have been sucked out, they are gone from the body and do not come back. A person will not be able to gain weight in the same area again.

But that doesn't mean that the person will not be able to gain weight. It is possible to gain weight after liposuction, and the results are not always desirable.

When a person does not maintain a healthy lifestyle in the post-surgery period, they are susceptible to weight gain just like anyone else. The difference is that they cannot gain weight in the areas from which they have had fat removed.

The fat will find new places to be distributed, and sometimes the places are unusual. Every case is unique and some people are not too disappointed by their new weight gain. If the fat is distributed to a normal area, such as the butt, there may be nothing to be concerned about.

However, some people gain weight in strange places, such as the ankles, back, or arms. This can make them look out of proportion or even downright strange. At that point, little can be done about it, too.

To avoid this unfortunate problem, recipients of liposuction must maintain a strictly healthy lifestyle after having the surgery to be careful not to gain any unwanted weight.

That's why it's a good idea to develop healthy habits before ever going in for liposuction. It's a lot easier to keep exercising than it is to have to start after having the surgery. Those who take good care of themselves and watch their weight gain carefully do not need to be too worried about having liposuction.
