A Food Vacation on Prince Edward Island
A Food Vacation on Prince Edward Island

While touring Prince Edward Island and seeing all the lush farmland and coastline, it should come as no surprise to you that food is the single most important industry on the Island. Food accounts for a major portion of the Island economy either through fishing or farming. PEI has a world wide reputation for being a clean and green environmental place.

If you had to choose one word to describe the food industry of PEI, that word would probably be fresh. The Island is known for its oysters, mussels, potatoes as well as wild game and deep sea fish delicacies. What ever food is on your plate was probably harvested or caught the same day, while the greens and herbs of your salad were probably grown in a garden not too far away.

If you're interested in making at least part of your vacation a hands on foodie experience, then sign up for a shift as a worker on a lobster boat and learn first hand how the crustacean goes from the water to your plate. Maybe you're not so hands on, but like eating lobster and other shellfish, then possibly the PEI International Shellfish Festival is what you want. The festival is three days of music, oysters and mussels. Shucking competitions take up most of the time in late September. The Fall Flavors Festival offers smoking and pickling workshops, oyster tonging and potato picking. World renown chefs cook up nine course meals to wow the crowds.

PEI is also called the Gentle Island of Rejuvenation, striking the perfect blend of destination and restful vacation. In addition to the food and food gathering experiences, there are regular activities to indulge in, including golfing, swimming, cycling, or even relaxing on the beach. Don't forget to sample the chocolates at the Island Chocolate Company in Victoria by the sea. Or you may want to visit Green Gables and New Glasgow to taste the local jams and chutney made at the PEI Preserve Company. Those who prefer to drink their samples, should stop by the famous Rossignol Estate Winery. There is something for everyone on Prince Edward Island.
