subject: Polarized Eyewear - Differences Between Polarized And Unpolarized [print this page]

Many, many people can be found wearing a pair of sunglasses. There are several different reasons why someone is wearing them. The most typical reason why they are worn is obviously to keep the glare of the sun out of your eyes. Sometimes people wear them when they are playing a sport, not only to keep the sun from hindering their gameplay, but also help keep foreign objects from getting into their eyes and causing damage. And of course, there is the group that wears simply for looks. Many may think that are sunglasses are the same, with the only differences being simply cosmetic. There is actually a fairly big difference, especially when you are comparing polarized eyewear with unpolarized eyewear.

The biggest difference between polarized eyewear and those that are not polarized has to do with light filtering. Non-polarized sunglasses will simply filter out any light, making everything look darker. Polarized lenses are able to filter out certain types of light while still letting other kinds of light to show through. They are designed specifically to filter out light that is being reflected off of horizontal surfaces, while still letting light reflected off of vertical surfaces through. The type of light most people buy sunglasses for is horizontal light, which you can find being reflected off of roads, water and snow.

There are many different activities where people will want to make use of polarized eyewear rather than a traditional pair of sunglasses. Fishing, in particular, is one such activity where polarized sunglasses can be extremely useful. When you are out fishing, the glare from the water can be pretty bad. If you just put on a regular pair of sunglasses, the glare will go away, but everything will be dark too, making some things harder to see. If you have a pair of polarized lenses however, you can eliminate the glare coming off the water, but in doing so, you will also allow yourself to now be able to see the fish. Driving and playing sports are two other applications where polarized lenses will be helpful.

One time when polarized eyewear will be more of a hindrance than beneficial is when there is snow involved. If you are going skiing or snowboarding, you will be much better off with non-polarized lenses. And the reason for that is simply because they will keep you from the light reflected off of an icy patch, which you will need to see in order to avoid it.
