subject: News And Commentary - Definition [print this page]

For most of us, when we hear about news and commentaries, we think about the same thing. For news, it's the current events or the current happenings within a state, a city, a neighborhood, a town, a nation, a continent or the whole wide world, and when we hear about commentaries, we think about the opinion or comment of an author. It is an opinionated piece of literature that is part of a news paper or news press. For most of us, news and commentaries complete a news paper or a news article that is because, without them, newspapers wouldn't become newspapers. However, there is much more to news and commentary than what we think.

For one thing, news and commentary are not just what we think they are. A quick look into news and it tell us that news isn't just news because it is new. For starters, NEWS is an acronym. It stands for North, East, West and South. Isn't that quite convenient? We always thought that news was named because it was new, but now, we learned that News is an acronym. The priorities of news or when writing news is that it must be current, and it must be relevant to the people. So, when writing news, the audience or your readers must be able to relate to what you are saying. For commentaries, it works the same. However, commentaries are opinionated, but, do remember that your readers must be able to relate to what is said in the commentary.

Both news and commentary complement each other, and make a newspaper or a news website complete. News and commentary give us a glimpse of facts (news) and opinions (commentary), so as we will be kept much more up to date with the recent happenings around us.
