subject: Truths About Time And Procrastination [print this page]

You will never find joy and happiness once you start practicing time management.

This is completely absurd, I tell you. I think there's no other liberating thing that to effectively manage your time. There are many blessings to it. First, you get to do the things that you need and love to do. You can allocate the most appropriate times for your work, for yourself, and for your loved ones. You can get rid of stress. You will have a better positive outlook in life since there's no room for you to always worry about not making it to the deadline.

You need to have at least a quiet hour.

As much as you want to declare a quiet hour for yourself, this is just a philosophy of someone who could just be finding an excuse not to do anything but wait for the perfect quiet moment. Even when you're all alone, there are still times when you feel tempted to do something else. Time management means making sure that you can rise above these challenges and be courageous enough to shield yourself from any form of interruption, even if they are present.

You should complete the project first before you decide to move on to the next.

This could be a very sound advice if the project will not burn you out, or if there are no other urgent tasks that need to be done. Better time management may mean learning how to prioritize. Hence, urgent and important projects come first.

Procrastination

Time Management: Increase Your Productivity and Effectiveness of Harvard Business School defined procrastination as putting of an activity for another time even if you can basically do it now. Moreover, according to the book, there are three main reasons why a person tends to procrastinate:

a. They find the job uninteresting.

It's very important that you are motivated to do something. Once passion is already out, you will feel the drag of the job. The next best thing that you want to achieve is to get back the motivation again, so you are able to proceed in completing the job.

b. You don't want to fail.

Everything has its risks, but there are some of them that you could be apprehensive of facing. If in the first situation you want to get your motivation back, with this second reason you want to muster enough courage to accomplish the task. Unfortunately, the more you delay the job, the more that fear sets in.

c. You have no idea where you are going to start.

Does the project seem overwhelming for you? I recall one time when I was basically starting out with my home-based business, and I only had a few employees working with me, I received this huge project. It feels so big enough for me that there were a couple of days when I had not done anything. I forgot one essential step in time management: breaking tasks into smaller pieces and then determining priorities. Thankfully, with too many sleepless nights, I was able to fulfill the project, but I got so stressed that I decided to take a vacation afterwards.
