subject: The Art Of Choosing The Perfect Mens Tie [print this page]

The focal point of any men's suit is the tie, and it should therefore be carefully chosen to make the best possible impression.

There are size, colour and style issues that need to be considered, as well as a knowledge of what is already in your cupboard that will work well with the tie.

You must always start off by looking for a tie that is the corrent size. How tall you are is the most important factor. For men who are a little taller, the tie will obviously need to have some extra length.

A width of 8-9cm is fairly standard and will never go out of fashion.

If the tie is to be worn with a particular suit, the best option is to have the suit with you, either being worn or in a suit bag.

This will let you perfectly match the length and colour with the suit jacket.

If you will often be wearing the tie with no jacket on, or a sports jacket, the pants become a more important consideration.

Espeically where the tie is slightly more expensive, quickly scan for any defects - loose threads, stains, poor weaving etc.

The more important the occasion on which the tie will be worn, the better off you are to go with something made of silk or a silk blend.

If you know you will be wearing the tie to important meetings, always choose quality over price.

Try to avoid so called 'humorous' ties...because the only one laughing tends to be you.

Its always good to have one or two of these ties tucked away somewhere for certain occasions, but as a general rule cartoons and pictures should be outlawed.

You can't go wrong with solid colours or stripes that are well matched with your suit

If you're shirt is striped, it is generally best to avoid striped ties. Solid colours are a better choice here. The opposite also works well ie a solid colour shirt will work well with a striped tie

The more serious the situation, the more conservative the tie should be in both design and colour.

Ties can be used to contrast the colour of the shirt. So a light coloured shirt and a dark tie may match up well and vice versa.

As a general rule you can't really go wrong with dark red or dark blue ties

One often neglected aspect is skin colour and the shape of your face. Stripes work well if you have a more angular face, strong chin etc. Tues that are paisley printed will look good on guys with a more rounded face.

Hioefully having read this you will be a little more prepared next time you need to search for a tie that suits you
