subject: Laptop Power Supply - Either From A Rechargeable Battery Or Ac Adapter [print this page]

A laptop computer typically has two sources of power. The laptop power supply usually comes from a rechargeable battery. There is also an AC adapter that provides power.

All laptops come with a battery. These batteries are usually slipped into a slot on the under side of the laptop computer.

Batteries have varying lives before they need to be re-charged. The life of the battery can last anywhere from two hours to five hours, it is completely dependent on the use of the laptop and the quality of the battery.

The battery is recharged simply by plugging the ac adapter into the laptop and an electrical outlet. There is an indicator on the screen of the laptop that will advise when the power is low or when the battery is charging. There is usually a warning that is displayed that advises the user that the laptop battery power is low and that it is time to plug in the AC adapter. Plugging in the ac adapter will immediately start charging the battery and the lap top can still be used. There are some newer laptops that have solar powered batteries as the laptop power supply.

There have been a few issues with AC cords in the past few years that have involved the cords burning up and setting the laptop on fire. These faulty AC cords have since been recalled and that problem has been fixed.

A laptop power supply is the only way a laptop will work. A frayed ac adapter cord is dangerous and can start a fire. A laptop battery will have to be replaced over time because it will not be able to be re-charged. If it is faulty you run the risk of losing information and causing damage to your laptop.
