subject: Doing A Thick Hairstyle [print this page]

Short and long styles can work well with thick hair. The length you choose will depend on the shape of your face, and your own preferences. As coarser hair can be more difficult to work with, you may want to stick with long or short styles.

Long and Curly:

While long hair can tame down curls by weighing them down, extremely curly hair will still spring up and more manageable. You can add layers to enhance curls and volume. Also, don't use layering to keep it tamer. You can pull long, curly hair up into a loose bun or a partial knot.

Short and Curly:

Short, curly hair springs out in all directions and its short length keeps it from getting out of control. Layers will add more volume, depending on your preferences and hair type. Pull back chunks of hair and secure them with barrettes or clips to keep your curls out of your face.

Texturizing:

Extremely thick, coarse hair can be texturized to make it less heavy and boosting it. Texturizing means using a razor or texturizing shears to shorten some curls while leaving others long, creating many layers. This makes the hair to flip outward when styled with a blow dryer, especially with the help of a smoothing gel.

Long Straight Layers:

Long, straight, thin hair loses body and can look greasy, whereas long, straight, thick hair can look beautiful. Long layers let you flip the ends over or under and also help waves to last longer. You can curl it with a large barrel iron, or large rollers, to add waves and body.

Short and Spunky:

If gently layered, short and straight hair will have lots of body. To add texture, use a texturizing gel and try parting your hair in different ways for an interesting variety of looks.

Longer Bob:

A longer bob looks great, if styled carefully. You need to avoid this style, if you have extremely thick, coarse hair. You can add thick bangs to make it more manageable, by helping to keep hair out of your face.
