The Pat Flynn Story
The Pat Flynn Story

Pat Flynn's story started when he graduated college, he actually went to University of California in Berkeley where he studied Architecture. he loved it, got a nice 9 to 5 job after that. He really saw his whole life ahead of him like planning to work til he was 6 to 5. It was all set for him not until he had this whole economy crisis thing that led him to lose his job. He was kind of having this turning point where he could decide whether to look for another 9 to 5 job or try getting business online which he heard so much about lately. From there, he has been keeping up with people like Yaro and Darren Rowse from Problogger. Its really inspirational for him but still, it's hard to accept because he loved his job.

Getting laid off back in October 2008 has actually evolved from a unique story which made him even more prominent without knowing it. Kind of funny and accidental, he actually had a blog before he got laid off in his job. It was a blog that I used just for him. He didnt ever plan on having anyone else look at it which sounds kind of weird but heres the reason.

He used the blog to help himself kept track of notes for a particular exam that he was taking for the architecture industry. Its the LEED exam, L-E-E-D which stands for Leadership, Energy and Environmental Design. His handwriting is terrible and he's really good at typing and using computer and stuff so he used that talent to create a blog and use it as a content management system to help himself to study and organize notes to pass this exam. Eventually, everyday he put my notes on, organize it and go back to it later and study off a bit. So if he's on a business trip somewhere, he would just go online and check notes there and without having to hold a huge binder or anything like that which is also helpful.

When The Internet Craze Started

And then from there, he passed the test and for some reasons, he just checked my stats one day and saw that thousands of people around the world are actually checking out his notes online for this particular exam. It scared the crap out of him because he was like he didnt understand how the web worked really and he kept asking himself "How did this people find me?"

Without expecting it, the traffic all came and it automatically did. The natural way thing should happen which they think why those are the best techniques because those are the natural techniques in Googles eyes. Apparently, he had ranked super high for the keywords that he was using. Then he used that moment to think about his blog, where was that and he brought up a goal that if he can't monetize it, he'll go back for a 9 to 5 job but if he can make it, he'll see if he could continue along the way.

First he started to put Adsense on the blog which is a normal thing people do trying to monetize it and it did work and was earning like 50bucks a month, 50bucks on the first month. It was pretty good and that was my first money ever made online. He's got inspired and thus he checks his stats every single hour to see if he earned and when he saw 12cents in the last hour, he thought its pretty awesome for doing nothing.

His Shift To Private Advertising

But then from there, he went to find private advertising where there are other companies in the industry that also have lead stuff, like seminars and practice test and stuff. So he would sell space on my website for 125125 advertisement.

One company contacted him first because they had people doing research for websites that were ranking high and the keywords that they wanted to, so they found his blog first. What he did was as he saw whos advertising on Google Ads, he saw what those companies were, he just contacted them directly and said he can rent you a nice looking banner for extra amount of dollars.

First when he did it, it was like 50bucks a month and was like that was awesome, that was a lot of money asking for someone. But then thats when he started getting into Internet business, talking in forums and asking a bunch of questions. He was like "50bucks a month, would that give much traffic?" He's surprised when almost all people in the forum would say like this, "You can get a lot more, why dont you just try asking for $500 and see what happens..." and so he went Are you crazy?

He was like telling himself no way but he still did. Much of the companies agreed because they saw the site as a valuable hub for their type of audience and he was making 500bucks a month or a little bit more for some other ads that run or two. From there, he was also making decent amount of money and a lot of bloggers would be happy with 500 to 1000 a month but to earn a living off for that, he decided it's not quite enough.

Persistence Brings Success

With that mindset, he thought of asking help for more of other experts online to help him go through with that until they suggested that what if he would come up with the product like what he did on the content on his blog. They also are inspired to how he's created the LEED exam resource so it could be a product once combined all in all.

To cut the story short, Pat has again hesitated at first but he still gave it a go. Eventually, he got surprised with the amount of sales he got from this green exam e-book and planned to come up with more products for his audience.

After couple of researches and also advices, he then made an updated version of his e-book which is an audio guide. He came up and hired a voice over person to record it and then after that, he's compiled all the other information and instantly, people has just got more interested with this stuff. All in all, he's made thousands of dollars per month after creating 3 products accompanying the LEED exam e-book.

Fortunately, his passion has started to boost through his interest on the Internet and use his knowledge all from there. He started to outsource his business tasks, generate more content and also launch his new blog called Smart Passive Income. This blog shares his journey in his smart passive lifestyle of generating streams of profitable projects to help his other businesses leverage. He's also been involved with developing iPhone Apps as part of his interesting career on the Internet as well that has made him couple of bucks for a living.

Certainly, Pat Flynn serves as one of these greatest assets to look for and model off when it comes to having this great, unexpected and yet passionate lifesyle he's started and being successful with online after losing his job. It's really all right to face the risks behind advertising and spend a bit of money to learn more, and also work harder in setting up your own business at the start of the game. Because once you set the systems all up, it gets easier and easier along the way as well. That's the challenge of Internet marketing and creating your lifestyle online.
