subject: Why Hair Damage [print this page]

There are so many things that damage your hair. A few of them are mentioned below.

1. Usage of hair pins and clips:

Hair pins and clips stick onto the hair so tightly and this tightness may cause hair to break. Do not use rubber bands to tie the hair back. Instead, you can use a fabric scrunchie or loose fitting comb or clip with rubber padding.

2. Extreme brushing and tearing:

Unnecessary brushing or combing, particularly when the hair is wet, causes serious damages to your hair. You should use a wide-toothed comb or a brush with natural fibers.

3. Chlorine and salt water:

Never forget to wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo after swimming in chlorine water or in salt water. As chlorine and the salt in the water can dry your hair and make it very brittle, washing these out of the hair immediately after a swim, protects your hair.

4. Excess heat:

It is advisable to allow hair to dry naturally and not to use any type of heating tool. If it is hard to practice, you can try to use it on the lowest setting possible.

5. Over-washing:

Excess of washing your hair can dry out your scalp, cause flakes, and reduce the natural oils on your head.

6. Sun damage:

Apart from the skin that requires protection from UV rays, your hair also needs to be protected from it. This may cause whenever you step outside during daytime, even in the winter. Hence, you should be conscious of the sun's rays and cover up if you're going to be out in the sun for a while.

7. Cold weather:

Due to less humidity in the air, cold weather dries out hair more quickly. This dryness makes hair brittle and prone to breakage. Undergoing weekly deep treatments help to protect hair from being dried out.

8. Over-perming:

Ensure not to re-perm your hair until the original perm has grown completely. As normal perm damages hair, a perm on top of a perm is good.
