subject: The Reflex Systems [print this page]

The body is divided into 10 zones, numbered 1-5 on each side of the body. The zones run from the tips of the toes to the head and back down to the fingertips, each one linking all parts of the body. Each zone one starts at the thumb and big toe, with the two zone fives starting at the little finger and the fifth toe on each side of the body. Reflexologists see the body reflected onto the hands or the feet, so spend time working on each zone. Double organs divide up in the obvious way, the right kidney, for example, on the right foot or hand. Other organs appear where you might expect: the heart on the left, the liver on the right. Some organs are represented twice, with a small reflex point within a larger area. This is because some organs have specific reflex points, which stimulate the organ more than working on the whole organ area. Draw four imaginary lines on your feet, starting between the toes and slicing down through the heels. Zone one is the strip containing your big toe, zone two the second toe and so on. The little toe is in zone five. When you read about the 'inside' and 'outside' of the foot, imagine your footprint. The inside is the edge from the big toe to the heel, the outside from the little toe to the heel. The same applies to the hands: the inside is nearest the thumb, the outside nearest the little finger.
