subject: Great Kitchen Island Ideas - 6 Keys To Remember [print this page]

The reality is that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach and that starts in your kitchen. If you want to win a man's heart one must give careful consideration to the construction or remodeling of your kitchen. Our home revolves around the kitchen. I enjoy cooking and the way our kitchen flows into our living room.

Guests are never a problem and no one is left out because our kitchen opens up into the living room. Here are some ideas of what I believe a beautiful kitchen should look like that is used a lot. We'll begin with the kitchen island.

1. SIZE: Make sure your kitchen island has adequate space. An island with an adequate amount of space helps. It should be large enough for you to do more than one project at a time.

2. LIGHTING: Put sufficient lighting above the island. Inadequate lighting will make it hard for you to accomplish your culinary endeavors.

3. ELECTRICAL OUTLETS: With an electrical outlet in your island you can have a wonderful buffet that keeps food warm. You can also use slow cookers and crock pots.

There is so much more that you could do with a kitchen island. I love my kitchen because it is a great place to entertain company. A kitchen island is a wonderful addition to a home and good selling point too. Make sure to get it right the first time as it is hard to change the structure of your kitchen. Here are some things to avoid.

1. Avoid making walkways around your island too small. To ensure enough walking space take a black magic marker and tape measure and lay your cabinets out on the floor. This will allow you to see how much room you will have to move around.

2. Avoid leaving wasted space beneath the island: Utilize all space. You can do this by adding storage, a wine cooler, microwave, etc.

3. Avoid not adding plumbing: A small sink can be very helpful for cleanup.
