subject: Enjoy Your Patio More With An Outdoor Fireplace [print this page]

Fireplaces have long been the centerpiece of the family home and for centuries they served as tools that provided heat for warmth and to cook meals. Central heating and modern day appliances have largely taken over those functional roles in most houses but people are now discovering the charm offered by the installation of an outdoor fireplace.

With a quality fireplace you are able to enjoy the great outdoors any time of the year, even during the cold winter months. In addition to providing warmth, you can increase the aesthetic value of any outdoor space with a fireplace installation. If warmth is your main goal, choose a design that mimics a campfire and allows people to sit around the entire perimeter. The more traditional design will only emit heat in an area roughly the shape of a small cone right in front of the unit. If aesthetics if more important, there are many decorative choices available.

Fireplaces located outside are governed by their own set of local regulations. It will be important for you to have a good understanding of the local ordinances before you decide on the final plans for your patio improvement project.

There are some areas that have banned wood burning units to reduce the risk of fire from flying embers. Wood burning units release less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere but there are specific weather conditions that cause smoke particles to be trapped in the air.

Using wood as a fuel takes work when it comes to preparation and also when it is time to clean up. Ashes will have to be disposed of regularly and that is a messy job. The fabricated logs used in gas units are made of concrete, ceramic fiber or ceramic and the manufacturers have gotten really good at making them look like real wood. They give off plenty of warmth and light and you do not have to worry about burning embers blowing around.

These gas units are fueled with propane or gas. If you live in a heavily populated area, natural gas will be very easy to find. Propane is more expensive but will be the only option if you live in a remote location. Propane tanks are refillable and are equipped with a regulator designed to control the flow of gas. Ignition is quick and it can be lit by remote control or manually with the turn of a knob.

The chiminea was introduced in Mexico and is basically a portable fireplace made out of clay, cast iron or aluminum. The bulbous box is often shaped like a teardrop and has a large opening for the fire and a slender neck that acts like a chimney to vent smoke and facilitate airflow for a more consistent burn.

The type of outdoor fireplace you choose to buy and install will be a matter of personal preference. If you want to just set it up and forget about it, consider buying a gas unit. These are virtually maintenance free and there are never any ashes to clean up. If it is made out of metal, you will need to buy a cover for it to protect it from moisture and prevent rust.

Make your patio or deck more functional with a stylish outdoor fireplace. This simple installation will instantly beautify your outdoor living space and give your family a comfortable place to gather.
