Letters from her during this period of time have survived and shed light on her extraordinary intelligence and insight. Varina wrote articles for magazines and several of her handwritten letters from New York are maintained at the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library in Beauvoir, Mississippi, and in the Special Collections archives of Columbia University.
