subject: Improve Your Overall Healthy By Building Stronger Back Muscles [print this page]

Most people think of the abs, arms and legs when asked about a muscular and toned body. Back muscles are more important than most people give them credit. We all know the importance of other muscle groups, but did you know that none of them contribute more to overall strength, good health and injury prevention than the back muscles? Use the following information to help build and maintain back muscles.

1. The trapezius, latissimus dorsi and the erector spinae are the three main muscle groups of the back.

Your lower back muscles, or erectus spinae, maintain your balance. Trap muscles can be found in the center of the upper back and come from the neck. Hard work is done by the lats of the back. Pushing, pulling, and body stabilization comes from these muscles located at the middle of the back.

2.Perform dumbbell rows and bent-over rows. Ask a weight trainer or a bodybuilder on the correct way to perform these. Maintenance of the back muscles are dependent on these.

3. Increase your lat muscles by using the lat machine. Almost any gym has these machines. Lat pull-downs are traditional ways to build back muscles.

4. Success means including chin-ups and pull-ups. The differences between these two exercises are very small. In order to do a pull-up, place the hand on the bar facing downward. Proper chin-ups require the palms grasping the bar while facing up. How the bar is clasped is what makes the big difference between them.

5. The core, muscles at the very center of the body, need to be built up. Make sure you work these. They are found near the abs and torso and are very important.

6. Don't jump into doing dead lifts. This needs to be done after you have more experience. All back muscles are worked with these. Always when performing dead lifts you should have a spotter. They tend to be dangerous especially for those new to the exercise. Dead lifts should not be attempted until you are more familiar with building machines.

Important Warnings

* Do not follow written instructions on how to use equipment. The best way to learn is by following visual aids located normally on the machine. There is always help available. Get someone who knows what they are doing to demonstrate exercises for you. You will learn more.

* Limit fat in your diet. Green leafy vegetables, fruits and lean protein are best for you. Diet is as important as exercise to be able to show off a toned back.

*Meal replacements and protein supplements can be deceiving. In the end, you will spend way more than you really get from them. There is yet to be solid proof in how well protein pills or energy foods help build back muscles.
