In advance you need to purchase a quantity of cheap Christmas crackers. You then prepare some little card inserts to go in each one. The majority of these cards simply say "Sorry you were not lucky this time". A few however are lucky golden cards. These entitle the person to a special prize.
With most crackers you will be able to insert a card by loosening one end of the cracker, popping in a card and tightening back up.
All the crackers are then placed on your stall. People come and buy a cracker. They pull it, either with their friends or the stallholder to see if they have one a special prize. The beauty of this is, of course, that even if you don't win a big prize you still get all the other paraphernalia - toy, hat, joke / motto from the cracker.
The bang of the crackers is also a great advertisement for the stall and will add to the Christmas fun of your event. Kids in particular love this stall.
There are all sorts of ways of adapting this basic idea for instance have certain numbered insert tickets corresponding to particular types of prizes perhaps ranging from a few jelly beans to a box of chocolates or even to win specific items similar to a tombola.
