subject: The Older Members Of Society Begin Using Social Media Sites [print this page] Suddenly during the course of the last year or two, it seems like just about everyone's parents have a social media account.
There are many people in their 40s, 50s, and even older ones using sites like Facebook and Twitter these days. This was extremely uncommon just a year or two ago, but things have changed in a very short time period.
People from older generations are really enjoying this too. They absolutely love the fact that it gives them the ability to communicate with old friends who they haven't seen in years or even decades. Social media sites make it extremely easy to casually stay in touch with such people, and this is a great thing.
Like me, you may find it entertaining to see parents suddenly becoming enamored with everything these sites have to offer. After all, these sites have been around for years still.
These are the same people who took years to get acclimated to the web, and it looks like they're finally taking full advantage of the fact that they no longer need to pick up the phone in order to reach out to someone.
One has to wonder if baby boomers are still in the honeymoon phase of this all. Will they be as active on these sites a year or two from now, or will they revert back to their old ways? While the answer to this is unknown at this point, I do feel that their use of these sites is a legitimate testament to the power of social media.
So, it's official. What started out as a communications platform popular with college kids has officially come full circle. Not only are people five years younger and ten years older using it, but their parents have steadily begun to embrace it too. Will grandparents be next by any chance? It wouldn't surprise me if they were.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, simply search a few of the friends lists on your friends' pages. There's no doubt in my mind that you'll see some parents with profiles suddenly in the mix.
