subject: Information On Molds And Mold Solutions [print this page]

There are more than three hundred thousand kinds of molds. This figure is an estimate because nobody knows for sure how many are there and experts agree that there could be more. Molds are one type of fungi that are found both outdoors and indoors. They are mostly found in warm areas that are damp and humid and they spread by making spores. These spores are able to survive in harsh environments, even in dry places that do not normally support mold growth.

Molds may seem relatively harmless other than the dirty look they give your walls and tiles. However, they cause mild to severe allergic reactions especially to people who are highly allergic mold spores. People who are at high risk of mold infection are workers who are exposed to molds in their occupational environment. People who have chronic lung problems are also at risk of mold infection in the lungs.

Molds thrive in areas where there is moisture. To minimize exposure and the spread of molds, it is best to keep rooms such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, basements and garages properly ventilated. If you discover that there is a mold growth in your home or office, the most likely suspect is a leaky water pipe or water source that does not have proper drainage. You should immediately clean them and fix the water problem to keep it from spreading in your home and causing serious illnesses. People who are highly sensitive to molds should keep away from places that are likely to have molds such as wooded areas, cut grass and compost pits or piles. Places such as antique stores, saunas, greenhouses, mills, farms, construction areas, flower shops and summer cottages are also at risk of mold formation.

As soon as you notice a mold formation in certain areas, clean them immediately using a regular household cleaning solution. There are products in the market that are especially made to eliminate mold formation. If you prefer to make your own cleaning solution, you can prepare a mixture of one cup of bleach and a gallon of water. However, you have to take note that mixing bleach with ammonia creates toxic fumes that are harmful to the body. Do not mix any other cleaning materials to the mixture. Since bleach can damage the skin, use non porous gloves in cleaning and keep the doors and windows open to allow proper ventilation to the room.

If you think that the mold infestation in your home is unmanageable, or it is causing sever allergies to you and your family, you can contact a professional mold management company. Problems with molds should not be taken lightly.
