Should Most Entrepreneurs Even Be Entrepreneurs One of the toughest things I feel from my experience is for people to run their own businesses. I would also assume since most stats show that 1 out of 5 business fail that most could agree on my thinking. Did you also know that 1 out of 5 of everyone of those businesses fail after the next five years? Its almost like people are born to fail in business. My assumption would be that most people are not only wired for business failure, which is another topic in itself, but people are also taking the wrong approach with their businesses. Most inspiring entrepreneurs are starting a business based on their knowledge of a field. For example, most business owners come from a time where they use to work for somebody doing exactly what they thought they could be doing on their own. So the plumber works for ten years for a company called Joe Break Your Pipes Plumbing. As he goes to work every day he thinks to himself, Wow I could be doing this on my own and making way more money. This person starts to have thoughts about starting his own plumbing company. He sits all day and fantasies to himself. He tells his wife how exciting it will be to run his own business so she gets excited with him and says, Do it! Start your own business. This GUY that has been working for someone else his whole life decides to start running his own business. He buys the plumbing truck. He buys some tools. He buys some new work clothes. Oh and WAIT! Hes got to get some business, so this new business owner places ads in the yellow pages. (JUST LIKE HIS FORMER COMPANY HE WORKED FOR). He buys a few other marketing goodies like a website and online marketing. Hes fired up! Hes starting his business with 40k in debt. (Or maybe he had the money thats not really my point). Heres my point Michael Gerber, in the book the E Myth writes, The Fatal Assumption is: if you understand the technical work of a business, you understand a business that does that technical work. Michael Gerber later continues, All of them believing that by understanding the technical work of the business they are immediately and eminently qualified to run a business that does that kind of work. Back to my THOUGHTS : ) So the new business owner starts running his business with the understanding of the technical work. He works hard. Hes customers love him, and hes getting business here and there. Things are a little tight financially, and this NEW Entrepreneur begins to get a little nervous. Hes never had to really worry about in how to maintain a business in addition to his personal life. Hes always worked for someone else so hes only had to ever worry about him. Things start becoming a little tight month after month. His wife begins to get nervous, and she begins to tell him maybe this was not such a great idea to start your own business. Bills become late Hes working 16 hrs a day and not understanding how there is more months left at the end of the money. Heres one of many observations from the example Ive given you. First, most people go into business running a job. They treat their business like it was just another job. People begin to become hostage to their job and circumstances. Second, most people take an employee mindset into their new business. They are used to a structured environment of checking in and out everyday. People in our society just dont grasp the concept of being able to create their own economy. Although this is actually a really deep subject because there are many issues why there is such a failure rate in business. I mean think about it. Most people (and Im willing to bet over 97% of people) are not conditioned to run their own business throughout their lives. Most people are taught by their surroundings, i.e. friends, family, school, to get a job and work for the man. So its almost like people inspiring to become entrepreneurs are already wired for failure. I can go into many different things on why people are failing at such a high rate in business, yet I dont have the time today. Im simply writing this because I wanted to bring this to your attention. People dont have the CORRECT WIRING internally before they go into business. Its not necessarily peoples fault they failed a business or if they are struggling to create or make a business work. I dont care if someone runs a home business or a traditional type of business. These concepts apply to both. So I recommend people learn to master themselves emotionally, spiritually, and physically. I recommend people learn from people that have already built a successful business, not merely from traditional types of schooling. I recommend also that people learn to run a business the way a business is supposed to be run - that simply is to work ON the business and not IN the business. You as a new entrepreneur or veteran entrepreneur will never build a business unless you understand that you must learn to multiply yourself. That way you can work on just building the business and not in the business doing the technical work. About the Author:
